The PS3 design does look more appealling (IMHO) - and they quash the backwards compatibility issue straight off the bat which you would have thought was a no-brainer. It would be good to have images of the two that were to the same scale. Nice comparison work though.

Yeah I like the PS3 design much better. I’ve added a rough size comparison to try and get an idea of relative scale.

I’m really hoping the Xbox 360 will be backwards compatible… because there’s no way I can fit a new console into my loungeroom without getting rid of an older one.

That’s outstanding work - it is a bit bizarre how the Xbox 360 is concave and the PS3 convex. Would save space, one on the other maybe. Seems wireless controllers will be a big point of difference from current models, don’t know whether it is more cosmetic than a substantial change though. The marketing campaigns between the two couldn’t have been more different - if MS spent their marketing money on the console dev or game dev I wonder what the consequences would be.

The PS3 seems to have a lot more to it. Like they have some mega tricks up their sleeves. As an Xbox lover. I’m concerned. Very Concerned.

As for the shape. That has never bothered me. I just hope they have anti theft prevention on them this time. Someway I can call MS and say, look if anyone logs into Live from my Xbox. Just know that it is stolen, and can you please track it, so that I may banish them to somewhere behind bars.

The Xbox 360 reminds me of a PC box and the PS3 looks like a Bose sound system. If it just came down to looks I’d prefer a PS3 sitting next to my HD TV.

I can’t see how that is backwards compatible though. It’s unlikely that they’ve got a vertical slot-loading CD drive that allows you to insert the tiny GameCube discs as well as full size discs.

(btw. I’m not anti-Nintendo, I’ll happily add them to the comparison table above as soon as they release some system specs.)

It’s actually backwards compatible all the way back to NES according to gamesindustry.biz, by way of emulation. You’ll be able to download Nintendo’s back catalogue apparently.

I’m not sure how they’ll handle the tiny GameCube discs, but they claim it’s compatible with GameCube games as well.

You may recall nintendo hiring emulation programmers a while back.

Tellingly, one of the key announced features of the Revolution is nothing to do with next-generation games at all, but rather to do with Nintendo’s back catalogue - all of which will be playable on the new system, right from the NES through to the N64 and the GameCube.

The console will boast 512MB of on-board flash memory storage which can be expanded by the addition of industry standard SD memory cards. This storage is expected to be used to store NES, SNES and N64 titles which can be downloaded over the internet to the system, as well as for other purposes which the firm has alluded to but not yet revealed.

There’s what looks like a little mini-CD draw on the left hand side, middle of the console. I’d bet that’s where the GameCube discs go.

Nintendo states in their Revolution press release that “an innovative self-loading media bay will play both 12-centimeter optical discs used for the new system as well as Nintendo GameCube discs. You can also equip a small, self-contained attachment to play movies and other DVD content.”

It’s speculation, due to poor communication on Sony’s part, but:
Check out the Killzone 2 video footage on PS3.
It was shown during the Sony press conference, and before playing these game demo’s, a spokesperson said all the demos were running in real time on the PS3..
Unfortunately they didn’t specifically say that the Killzone 2 demo was running in realtime, so that’s lead to many people suggesting that it’s pre-rendered FMV (yes, it’s that good!).

There are many people like me who really hope that was a realtime cutscene done in the game engine though ;)

I’ve never been biased towards any machine. I had a ps and now an xbox, and based on the specs above i will most likely buy a ps3. To be honest i dont know why you would buy an xbox360 when you know a better machine (ps3) will be released within a year. What i’m interested to know is whether Sony will release a kickass multiplayer (like xbox live) for the ps3?

Yo i dont know why so many people like the look of the ps3 to me that looks like a printer. Now xbox360 , might not have blown us away at e3 like the ps3 did, but it is now known that all that we saw was running on alpha kits which means we still havent seen the power of the 360. Dont matter the specs im still stickin with the 360. I think it has alot more plus it actually connects with a psp.

The xbox is going to win hands down, since they are being true the whole time. So far xbox has mentioned what the system can and cannot do as well as give FULL Specs, which isn’t the case with the PS3 (just numbers without any true backing of polygon counts or anything of the sort). I was reading on IGN that even the engineers of the ps3 are not a 100% sure how the cell processor works, which will lead to problems. The system has been reported will cost (translated over to english and US currency) to 470 and the xbox is looking at 300. About the blue ray technology, their is no support currently for that device and will probably will not be so for another 3 to 4 years, which is when the next system will be pushed. I will have to buy both, but the ps3 looks like a George Forman Grill.

I have a feeling Sony is taking too big of a risk with their new processor, and the specks between Xbox 360 and the PS3 aren’t different enough for me to wait to buy a Playstation. The graphics are going to be awesome on both of them. Wich has the brightest future? Who can go against Microsofts programers and win? Is Steve Jobs working for Sony? The hardware is only a tiny piece of the pie. Look at Ps2 what a junk box, yet it still in the running. I am backing The Xbox360. Sony has dibs on the hardware devolopment, or do they? Microsoft definately owns when it comes to software development, and support. Will Sonys Online experience ever exceed Microsoft? I say NEVER. The PS3 doesn’t look better than the 360 to me. Now that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 specifications have been announced, it is possible to do a real world performance comparison of the two systems.

There are three critical performance aspects of a console:

Central Processing Unit (CPU) performance.

Oh wow! Am i the only one who thinks its not just a coincidence that xbox comes out with new specs just as ps3 overshadows them at e3. I think xbox’s new specs were roughly put together and in total are bs. Im not saying that everything sony said is true but xbox just has to admit defeat. With ps3 however i am now not so trusting with the cell proccesor any more but would still go for it over the 360. Yes the controller looks like a boomerrang but i think its ideal for grip and comfort. The reason why ps2 came out was because all of us had n64 and ps1 therefore seein the graphics of ps2 was just amazing. Then grand theft auto came out and so it sold alot. Now we get the xbox in the competition and it kills the ps2 with=xbox live, halo, halo2, splinter cell, bein able to hook up 4 xboxes, rippin ur own music, doa3, mechassault, project gotham 2, grand theft auto double pack, doom 3, metal gear solid substance. So basically xbox has every ps2 hit. Except devil maycry but xbox has Ninja gaiden, and about xbox 360 and ps3 well all i got to say is at e3 ps3 is showin “cg” when xbox is showin real time gameplay and there only alpha kits. thank you, now go and get your xbox.

If you look at some top US game publishers’ revenues over the past financial year, for non-handheld consoles, they on average earn 2 PS2 dollars for every 1 xbox dollar (EA, THQ, Midway, Activision). This is contrary to the idea of Xbox being on top or killing the PS2. I still submit the design work on the PS3 is sleeker and more refined than the Xbox360 and the PS3 should do better in the looks department in European markets, and of course in Japan. To throw the microsoft made comparison in the mix while generalising that we are uneducated is way out of line.

Also Ninja Gaiden is considering all next-generation multiplatform consoles (including ps3) and the on the Xbox360 is not gonna be an exclusive game. Also i think that the PS3 will reach numbers like PS2 or higher. Xbox360 is not gonna have such titles as the PS3. Microsoft has the lower hardware spec. of Xbox360 and not so many software/game developers for the Xbox (Xbox360 will be the same).
The cell processor is greater in Tflops(processing power) and its the most advanced CPU of today, the games will use C++(not Vu code like PS2) and that means easier for developers to handle. Also the PS3 will cost about 400$ when it comes out(depending on the price of Xbox360). The graphic cards are simmilar and the PS3s video ram for the graphic are
256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz, the nvidia chip runs on 550mhz i think. It has separate main Ram, patented by Rambus and it is much faster then GDDR3 which xbox360 uses, its 256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz. It has many slots and plug-ins, higher resolution/mode compatibility, bluetooth Controllers and uses DVD+/- and blu-ray technology in the optical drive (storage to 100 GB on 4layer BD disk!). The sound is/will be also nice. It will also have a hard disk and i think also Ps2 compatibility probably. It will come out in start of year 2006 and will not get old till 2010 at least. My advice, skip the new year xbox360 buy and buy the ps3 only or both consoles because xbox360 isn’t worth much alone.

devilhope, in your hole statement all i hear is i think, i think, why are you saying i think for eveything, your the same as the ps3 guys at e3 because they say they dont even know what that cell does. Xbox 360 again has been running on alpha kits but then again they are not afraid to actually show “gameplay” not “cg”. They showed such games as dead or alive four which was only 15 % done, now to me thas gonna look awesome when its done. Half of those games you mentioned will be on xbox 360, and remmember most of those games actually started out on xbox 1. Besides we all know that HALO3 WILL DO BETTER THAN PS3.

Killzone 2 is/was real gameplay and not pre-rendered animation. It was REAL ! There are some minor in-game bugs that confirm this(video clips prove). If killzone 2 was for real, it is one of the most advanced games (although its a starting game-2006- of the ps3) i’ve seen. The later games for PS3 will be much better in graphics, which the PS2 lacked vs. the first Xbox. Now the PS3 is also hardware superior to the Xbox360 (stupid name).

Devilhope, Killzone 2 was not real gameplay. It was CG. Even the developer admitted it. The PS3 is vaporware. They didnt even turn the thing on and it looks more like an old fax machine than a console. On the other hand, Gears of War was real gameplay. Hardware speaking, the Xbox 360 its superior. And yes, the Xbox360 is a stupid name.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the comparison between the sizes of the consoles are wrong. The PS3 is 3.25 inches longer and 1 inch higher than the Xbox360.

THe PS3 GPU(video card) isnt even finished yet. It was officially announced too, no argueing about that.

everyone keeps on forgetting this is microsoft the leader in software technology around the world .. why do you think microsoft skip hd and blue ray technology… because if you were on teamxbox you will know the technology that was patented that allows a dvd to hold 800 gigabites or more .. now compare that to blue ray not to say nvidia has never ,, and i will use the term never beaten ati when it comes to graphics technology… What was shown at e3 is only i would say 10 percent of what the xbox 360 can do…think about infinite bandwith infinite…no load times … microsoft has this down pack.. sony got scared that the reason why earlier if you recall they could show what the ps3 software could do…so they waited for e3 so what about tekken…or killzone big deal……we haven’t seen nothing…yet …microsoft knows what it is doing…can you customize your ps3 , i think not… its not about how powerful the cpu is , it what you can do with it…if you compare metroid or resident for gamecube to halo on the xbox , metroid or resident evil wins because of what the graphics card can do…xbox 360 is the winner just say.. and if you know sony they are going to price their system extremly high very powerful cpu , low bandwidth.. that sony for you.

Nothing’s more scary than MS fanboys. The PS3 may be further from reality, but the fact that Microsoft was running all their E3 game demos from Mac G5s indicates that *both* consoles are still in heavily in prototype phase and it’s impossible to make any solid claims as to relative speeds of either.

Anyway… maxhagen, do you have a source for that? I’d love to add exact dimensions to the table above if you have them.

I know I read them somewhere else also (I think it was IGN), but those are the “rumored dimensions”. But if you saw the MTV special and also the presentation of the PS3 you can see that the Xbox360 looked smaller than the fugly fax machine.

At the end, some people like Microsoft and buy their products, some people like Sony and buy their products too. I have both Xbox and PS2 and I might have both X360+PS3. But, if I have to pick a console right now based on provided proof of existence, I should pick the Xbox 360, and those that want to wait for the PS3, rejoice for your wait.

DEVILHOPE, again the killzone trailer was talked about and they said, “this is wat we are trying to accomplish” Which means it was not real gameplay. Ps3 did not show gameplay, well maybe some footaga but it never looked as good as that “cg” trailer of killzone 2. Well well just have to wait and see how the ps3 does when the almighty HALO 3 comes out on the same date.

As I understand it (and correct me if I’m wrong - I’m sure one of the MS boys will, you appear to be camping this thread) but with the current generation of consoles the processing/gfx power-hierarchy goes ps2, gamecube, xbox. With xbox being the ‘most powerful’.

Basically (as I understand it) this means that if a game comes out on all three platforms xbox is going to have the best chance of it being (assuming it wasn’t straight-ported to xbox from ps2 or what have you). I own the three systems - so if a game comes out on ps2 and gamecube, I buy the gamecube version. If it comes on on all three I buy the xbox version. Simple.

And yet I own more ps2 games than gamecube games, and more gamecube games than xbox games.

How does this work?
A few ways actually.

First is the obvious - that PS2 was released before GameCube which was released before Xbox. This gives each system more time to rack up a catalogue of games (good and bad). That said (without actually looking up the facts) I’m reasonably sure Xbox has a larger catalogue of games than the GameCube - certainly they have more market exposure/shelf space - which almost discounts this point.

Secondly you have exclusivity (something Nintendo is familiar with but Sony appears to have perfected) - this means that some of the best games (through design or lack of exposure) will never make it to other platforms. A few games from my own collection that come to mind are Katamari Damashi for the PS2 a game so different, simple and well executed you can’t help but giggle as you play it (type it into google and you’ll get a mass of blogs each one trying to out-plaudit the last - and I actually read about it here first, Thanks guys!). Ikaruga for the Gamecube (originally for the Dreamcast) - People keep saying shooters are dead but I keep seeing newer and better ones. Mark of Kri (PS2), Viewtiful Joe (GC - ok that’s on PS2 now also but still not Xbox), Mario Party 5 (GC), and so on and so on.

This brings me to my final point, Genres. What makes the games I’ve listed different is that they ARE different, each one represents either a beautiful execution of an existing genre or a blended/new genre all together. The bulk of Xbox only games seem to be Sports, Racers, or FPSs - this seems to indicate a very male 12 - 22 target market (I wouldn’t go so far as to imply that the MS fans on this forum fit into that group, that would be presumptuous). There are a few attempts at platformer (although the neither Xbox pad lends itself very well to this genre) and some dodgy RPGs (excluding the fantastic Baldur’s Gate entries - I bought the first one on PS2 before it came out on Xbox, and the second one on PS2 because I couldn’t find the Xbox one). Lets look at those three major genres: Sports games, personally I couldn’t give a toss, I own a couple ’sports’ games (Sega Soccer Slam, Mario Tennis) and I have no interest in playing EA’s “[Insert Sportsman’s] [Insert Licensed Sport Game], [Insert Year]”. Racers: again I’m not a big fan of “Realistic” racing (PSs GT3 is the best/worst example of this), nor am I interested in owning 11 variations on the theme. Mario Kart is about all I need. Finally FPSs - this is an interesting one because this platform seems to be dominated not by a genre but by a single game - a First Person Shooter called Halo. I own it. It’s good. Bungie have rocked since Marathon days. I own Halo 2 also, and those two games make up almost 50% of my games Xbox collection. However at the top of this post I missed out a platform: PCs (specifically Windows based computers). While I would prefer playing Prince of Persia on Xbox, Halo and the countless other FPSs are simply better geared to different input devices. In fact, I would have continued my trend of buying for the best system and bought Halo on PC has MS/whoever not done such a shoddy job of porting it (I mean for Christ’s sake the Xbox is essentially a PC on it’s side, how hard could it have been to port?)

Regardless, it seems counter-productive to be arguing the merits of what are still essentially theoretical systems. I understand the Xbox specs are closer to factuality, but it’s still like comparing a spaceship to a unicorn.

Short Overview

The Cell architecture consists of a number of elements:

The Cell Processor
This is a 9 core processor, one of these cores is something similar to a PowerPC G5 and acts as a controller. The remaining 8 cores are called APUs and these are very high performance vector processors. Each APU contains it’s own block of high speed RAM and is capable of 32 GigaFlops (32bit). The APUs are independent processors and can act alone or can be set up to process a stream of data with different APUs working on different stages. This ability to act as a “stream processor” gives access to the full processing power of a Cell which is more than 10 times higher than even the fastest desktop processors.

In addition to the raw processing power the Cell includes a high performance multi-channel memory subsystem and a number of high speed interconnects for connecting to other Cells or I/O devices.

Distributing Processing
Cells are specifically designed to work together. While they can be directly connected via the high speed interconnects they can also be connected in other ways or distributed over a network. The Cells are not gaming or computer specific, they can be in anything from PDAs to TVs and all can be used to effectively act as a single system. The infrastructure for this is built into each Cell as they operate on “Software Cells” which contain routing information as well as programs and data.

Parallel programming is usually complex but in this case the OS will look at the resources it has and distribute tasks accordingly, this process does not involve re-programming. If you want more processing power you simply add more Cells, you do not need to replace the existing ones as the new Cells will augment the existing ones.

Overall the Cell architecture is an architecture for distributed, parallel processing using very powerful computational engines developed using a highly aggressive design strategy. These devices shall be produced in vast numbers so they will provide vast processing resources at a low cost.

Conclusion

The first Cell based desktop computer will be the fastest desktop computer in the industry by a very large margin. Even high end multi-core x86s will not get close. Companies who produce microprocessors or DSPs are going to have a very hard time fighting the power a Cell will deliver. We have never seen a leap in performance like this before and I don’t expect we’ll ever see one again, It’ll send shock-waves through the entire industry and we’ll see big changes as a result.

The sheer power and low cost of the Cell means it will present a challenge to the venerable PC. The PC has always been able to beat competition by virtue of it’s huge software base, but this base is not as strong as it once was. A lot of software now runs on Linux and this is not dependant on x86 processors or Microsoft. Most PCs now provide more power than is necessary and this fact combined with fast JIT emulators means that if necessary the Cell can provide PC compatibility without the PC.

It will not just attack the PC industry but expect it to be widely used in embedded applications where high performance is required. This means it will be made in numbers potentially many times that of x86 CPUs and this will reduce prices further. This will also hurt PC based vendors’ desires to enter the home entertainment space as PC based solutions [Entertainment] will be more complex and cost more than Cell based systems.

This is going to prove difficult for the PC as CPU and GPU suppliers will have essentially nothing to fight back with. All they can hope to do is match a Cell’s performance but even that is going to be incredibly difficult given the Cell’s aggressive Cray-esqe design strategy.

Cell is going to turn the industry upside down, nobody has ever produced such a leap in performance in one go and certainly not at a low price. The CPU producers will be forced to fight back and irrespective of how well the Cell actually does in the market you can be sure that in a few short years all CPUs will be providing vastly more processing resources than they do today. Even if the Cell was to fail we shall all gain from it’s legacy.

Not all companies will react correctly or in time, this will provide opportunities for newer, smaller and smarter companies. Big changes are coming, they may take years but the Cell means a decade from now the technology world is going to look very different.

Holy crap man, thank you for your life story. I’m not for xbox or ps3. The 2 consoles are gonna be neck and neck. Really the 2 systems are just tricked out PCs. Both systems will have exclusive games such as PS3 with killzone and Xbox 360 with Halo and stuff like that. I honestly dont care about hardware, thats just a luxury for me. I just wana have some fun fraggin my friends online and tryin to beat that boss on the 5th level. I bet alot of you guys are thinkin the same way. ;-D

The Cell does sound awesome, and I really do hope it makes some headway into the desktop market, but sadly this comes down to a lot more than just technical superiority. Operating systems and software is what drives all demand for hardware, and Microsoft won’t give up their desktop dominance without an even bigger fight than they’re putting into the game console market. (they have a huge war-chest of cash to fight with)

What strikes me about the current situation is that we’re all benefiting largely from the intense competition, and the moment that one company “wins” and dominates the market will be the day that all this innovation begins to slow and E3 will be a lot less interesting to watch.

In terms of games, long live Sony and Microsoft and Nintendo!

And also what you said about x box killing the competion is not true because the top 5 best sellign games were all ps2 titles. The ps3 will win with out a doubt not only becasue it is a better system in almost every way, but also becasue there are alot more people that own ps2 than xbox. Everyone already owning a ps2 will obviously go with ps3 becasue it is backward compatible and they allready have a lot of ps2 titles. Also becasue of the market in japan. Bruce is spot on - competition drives progress. The ‘market leader’ within any industry is in the unenviable position of having to stay there. This is something that Mircosoft is learning the hard way with it’s Software (vs Opensource/Linux), Sony has learned the hard way with isNon-Mp3 Digital walkmans (men?) (vs iPod/MP3 Technology) and Nintendo may learn the hard way with it’s DS (vs PSP).

Man socom2,hahahahahah!!! thas your best game! c mon dude halo 2 outsold that peice of garbage!!!. you know wat i think socom2 didnt even sell half the times that halo 2 did. Ps2 does beat xbox but in game library beacuse if you compare a game that comes out for both systems you know that the xbox version has always had the best graphics, best control , and always extras. Actually that size comparison is wrong. The ps3 is bigger then the xbox 360…. it is actually the size of the original xbox. The xbox 360 also has the trimming conclave. Now on to gameplay and numbers, you have to realize that the ps3 cant actually achieve full potential because it doesnt have the inner bandwidth to allow its full power to be used, it gets tied up with all the different RAM. Now when Sony talks about 2.1 teraflops to microsoft’s 1, its meaningless. That is floating point, which encompasses 20% of a game, and coders avoid anything to do with floating point like it was a disease. The other 805 of the game is general , which the 360 has more of. The graphics cards are evenly matched right now, we will have to see. Now to games, most of the xbox’s games were real time, and they had some games running at their E3 booth and you could actually play them. The ps3 games were obviously CGI as one developer said, since their graphic card isnt done and none of their developers even have beta or alpha kits. Sony lied and said they were real time, when their developers said they were not. Also the 360 will have much better online play, as they already have Xbox Live, and Microsoft is a company made of coders, who a lot of times, code stuff for servers.SOny doesnt have a lot of exclusive games now with even its musclehorse GTA being ported, but they both have kickass games. Like what you like, the numbers add up, but still, just buy whatever you want.

i have taken a look at the specs of both ps3 and xbox2, in my opinion and the opinion of several other people xbox 2 will be better. It has the gfx capabilities of the next-next gen cards b/cuz ati(world record holder for fastest gpu) is giving msoft the r520 chip. Also, xbox is going to be a multimedia center, it’s not gonna break down like most ps2s. If you look at it, xbox games are easier to code and make than ps2 games are, that improves quality of the xbox games severely because they spend more time making the game and less time figuring out how to make the game. We all know that halo 2 currently holds the record for selling multimedia in one night (125 mil). name one ps2 game that has even come close to this. by carefully analyzing and comparing halo vs halo2 you can see the dramatic enhancements that the devs were able to make. Look at one of the first ps2 games and compare it to a newer game. then, of course the xbox 2 will have more RAM and have more processing power (500 MHz). The xbox 2 will have a usb 2.0 camera (free) to be used online. Hmm, let me see, does the eyetoy allow online playability? NO!!! So before you crazy Sony fans go and get your knickers in a bunch cuz the xbox is better than the ps2, think about this. IT IS NOT!!!!!!!!!

CONCLUSION
When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3. Keep in mind that Sony has a track record of over promising and under delivering on technical performance. The truth is that both systems pack a lot of power for high definition games and entertainment.

However, hardware performance, while important, is only a third of the puzzle. Xbox 360 is a fusion of hardware, software and services. Without the software and services to power it, even the most powerful hardware becomes inconsequential. Xbox 360 games—by leveraging cutting-edge hardware, software, and services—will outperform the PlayStation 3.

the ps3 is a powerful machine only its all based on a cell chip…so that is so fast that it is ahead of its generation …keep in mind nvidia hasn’t finalize their graphics chips……sony is all hype… that what they are all hype ….even gamecube has better graphics that ps2 and the ps2 has a higher pixel rate…if sony wants to redeem themselves they have to prove it…pricewise…and graphic wise …they have along way to go before i buy ps3 ….

i am not an expert in video games, so i came here for some help/advice. here is the story:

I own an xbox. i believed at the time when i purchased it that it was superior to ps2 so i got it. I have grown to like the xbox, the games, and especially the controller. the original one… yes yes… the big one… i just love it. the main reason being that it just fits perfectly into my hands and the 4 main buttons are so close to eachother that you bearly have to move your thumb around… i just find it easier to used as compared to the new s-controller as well as the ps2 controller (which i think is horrible)… even though i like my xbox but i am not a fanatic…

i will not be making my purchase based on brand name, rather i will be making it based on console attributes (hardware, software, support etc) so the one with the best package will be the winner for me… but i must admit, i would rather have MS win the battle… but if they don’t i will surely buy a ps3.

now for the difficult part… my questions:

1. what the hell is up with that ps3 controller? it looks awlful and not ergonomic at all. is that controller officially the one that will come along with the console?

2. bluetooth: what difference will that make? how will that technology be ustilized on a game console? what are its advantages?

3. The japanese presenter at E3 said something about 9 processors inside the ps3. whereas i think i heard that xbox360 will only have 3… is that true? is that a big adantage for sony?

4. blue ray. why isnt MS going for blueray… dont those disks hold more data? if so… wont that makes sony games larger hence better? due to the availability for more data?
In addition, someone talked about 800gb dvds… what is that? i never heard about it. will it be used by xbox 360?

5. i am very reluctant to accept the ign.com comparisson of the 2 consoles since it was done by MS. how realistic is it? or is it just a marketing effort?

6. I had no idea that ps2 had free online capabilities. this is a plus for them. i myself do not subscribe to xbox live… i might be missing out… but i do not see the reason why i should pay a monthly fee for that.

7. i see what the name xbox 360 stands for… but i myself do not like it that much. i would have prefered something along the lines of Next Box.

when you answer my questions try to be as objective as possible, so we can get a better idea of what is going on. i know both sides have their hardcore fans who support their brands no matter what… but i am just looking for some objective feedback.

1.)Alright well Ps3 controler does indeed look awfull but so did the first controler for the xbox. They can change it so don’t use that agenest them.

2.) I still don’t understand what will you use the blue tooth for. Theres alot of stuff in the ps3 that people dont need. Same with xbox 360 but they are still very good consoles

3.) I herd 7 for sony. hmm oh well. The difference bewteen the xbox 360 graphics and xbox are not HUGE and if the xbox ran only one core then i dont think many games will be able to touch the last core for a long while.

4.) Blue ray does seem like a good idea but dvd×9 will still hold alot. I herd they hold up to 8 gigs and thats alot for a game.

you are wrong there, the only games on the ps2 that you ever had to pay a fee to play online was the everquest series. i have the ps2 network adaptore i a dont have to pay anything.

It’s better to wait for the gamepad, it will be good im sure of it. It will not be a failure like the “bad Dreamcast gamepad imitation overgrown Xbox controller”

Cell processor of Ps3 will have 7+1 Units which act like different CPUs in one pack.* IBM who is the main character in making CELL told taht it is more advanced than G5*

Blu-ray technology enables to store up to 100GB space on Bluray disks. The next step after blu-ray will probably be Holographic disks over 1TB …I haven’t heard about a larger DVD than HD-DVD standard (small rival of Blu-ray, Optical drives which support both standards will be available for PC,probably)

All in all “The future, PS3 console will have a small advantage in hardware power (this is 100% true and objective), if Sony gets more developers the Microsoft Xbox360 will not reach higher sales than original XBOX(which was a great loss for Micro$oft) and will teach Microsoft a lesson. The Nintendo Gamecube (was and is for me the second choice because of great games-exclusives-fun!) and Revolution looks more promising than GC. PS2 ruled the universe and with PS3 the situation will be similar.”

ColorDeaf08….You dont know anything about ps2 so stop talking about it. Ps2 is free online and how do i know? Becasue i have about 30 games that i play online and they are all free! I think its rediculous to pay hundreds of dolars over the years to play online when you have already bought the game. And i cant see how some of you can even say that x-box is a more powerfull system, the ps3 is a more powerfull system all hands down. I admit that xbox has a better line up of games to start with, but that is only becasue it is being released first. The ps3 will have just as many games after it has been out a while. You guys are making it sound like only one system will surrvive and the other one will die out like dreamcast did. But they will both do very well im sure. ok u said name a game better then halo. ok right now ill admit it that sony does not have any fps games that are close to halo but socom in my mind is alot better then halo. maybe not in sales but i think gameplay and storyline, socom is a better fps then halo. and dont even try an come with sales because halo 2 sales dont come close to GTA San Andreas sales for the ps2 alone. E3 2005: Epic Says PS3 Footage Achievable

May 17, 2005 - In a recent post on the Voodoo Extreme message boards, Epic Games’ Vice-President and long-time gamer Mark Reign gave his two cents on the PS3 movies presented at Sony’s press conference yesterday in Culver City, California. Here’s what he had to say:

In addition to the Sony demos being shown by Phil Harrison, the Epic and EA presentations were the only third party portions actually running on the PS3 in real-time. But most of those movies, which I probably watched three or four during rehearsals for the event, look very achievable and some were probably rendered on the actual box but in non-real-time. When a system is year away, heck even with a system is six months away, it is reasonable to expect the power of the dev kits would still only be a fraction of the power of the final system.

I know we’ll certainly be able to achieve much more on the final box than we were able to show in our demo after working with the early dev kit for only ~2 months. As Tim mentioned our demo only really showed off the power of RSX and then still we’re talk about an RSX that’s nowhere near as fast as the final one will be. When we get home from E3 we’ll also start diving seriously into the power of the cell processor. This is a very powerful system!

Sony’s cell demos were extremely cool and inspiring but are totally achievable, and over time even surpassable, by third developers like us because, as Tim Sweeney said, the development environment is made up of parts we’re already intimately familiar with: OpenGL, NVIDIA graphics, Linux, and PowerPC. Think about Epic’s experience, for example. We rock on NVIDIA hardware. We have been doing OpenGL since Unreal 1. We regularly ship our games on Linux and we’ve won several Macintosh Game of the Year awards including a special World-Wide Design Award directly from Apple for UT2004. We’re going to be able to kick serious ass on PS3, and so are a lot of our licensees and other 3rd party developers, in a way that wasn’t remotely possible on past consoles.

My point is that developers are going to be able to get SO MUCH MORE power out of these consoles than they ever could in the past and so much closer to the raw power of the components. The next generation is just going to be AMAZING!!! Next-gen games will be a huge leap forward over current gen. Can you tell I’m excited?

and these are the creators of the unreal engine 3, the most advanced graphic engine to date not only for pc but now for ps3 and xbox 360, one thing kinda scary is that the unreal tournament 2007 demo they were running on nvidias unfinished graphic chip for the ps3, “ALONE” without the cell chip, and for it to look that good, we can only wonder how the final work will look.

That said, the night’s “big news” wasn’t that big at all. Namely, it was that Microsoft had once again enlisted another major Japanese developer, Square Enix, to support the Xbox. But Square Enix’s first game for the new console isn’t new at all–it was the massively multiplayer role-playing game Final Fantasy XI. While the news will bring cheer to the hearts of Xbox 360 buyers, PlayStation 2 and PC owners have literally been there and done that.

Once the presentation ended, Microsoft decided it was time to party like a rock star…by trotting out some rock stars in the form of the Killers (again) and the Chemical Brothers. Camera crews also roamed the crowd, asking attendees what they thought of the Xbox 360. But while some raved about the machine, a few fanboys were definitely in the mix. Shouted one into the camera, “I think Sony’s gonna kick Microsoft’s ass!”

and for your information on those specs u read off of microsoft. those were specs they sent IGN in an email that they made up after E3 was all said and done. yes maybe if u are an xbox fanboy, u would believe false info that microsoft sent themselves but ask yourselves this. if they had so much confident that the xbox 360 had more power then the ps3 then why didnt they show these specs during the E3 show? because if they did, everyone in E3 wouldve took it as a big joke and as microsofts only come back. go read the forums on IGN and Gamespot, everyone knows those are specs microsoft made up in the last second just to draw attention from an ass whooping sony gave them at E3, u dont believe me, go to the site i gave in my last post, and it will tell u who had the clear victory at E3.

on my last post i meant 80,000,000 ps2’s sold compared to xbox’s 20,000,000, thats triple the amount of consoles sold between ps2 and xbox and for just a year and three months head start. that is just some lop sided numbers that clearly tells u that the power of the console alone doesnt stand a chance against a power house of franchise games and alot of small games that are just plain fun that dont make there way to microsoft because they are all about mostly fps games. i would say some more but i am kinda tired of bringing true facts that sony will once again lead the next generation to where every type of gamer will want an awsome system with awsome games and now awsome graphics to be all in one package and will cost 399. where can u go wrong? ps3 hands down will own microsoft just like they have been owning every console that has tried to step in its way for the past decade and i just dont see how they are gonna lose because they still have there same franchise games and they showed off a few new franchises that has blown our minds, and alot of the games coming to the xbox 360 is gonna be making there way to the ps3 like ghost recon, rainbow six, games like that and they will prolly look 3 times better, and since sony will be using blu ray, they can add alot more gameplay and other contents to a game for the ps3 only then they can for xbox 360 or nintendo, damn 100 gb’s, that is just so much room for extra features and other thingz they can add in. i can already see all the smiles on the developers making games for the ps3, now they can finally do something they alwayz wanted to that they couldnt do before and still cant do for xbox 360 or revolution, for instants fight night round 3, yes this game is prolly gonna be on all three consoles but the ps3 version looks realistic compared to the xbox 360 version, i mean the ps3 is so much more advanced that the facial expression on the boxers face even tells u that sony is gonna own microsoft, lol.

As I saw many ads for the xbox360 vs the ps3, curiosity got to me so I decided to search it and I ended up here. It was quite interesting reading peoples’ thoughts on their preferred console. One thing that got to me though was that people like cloud01 were writing paragraphs about the ps3. How could you write so much and be so confident to know about it when it is not going to even be out for another year. You sound like you have the system in your house already. A year is a long time away and the sky’s the limit on what can be changed so don’t think that these specs are set in stone. Maybe Sony is hyping the ps3 way too much for their fans and might not live up to what they say, nobody knows. When I read these arguments they are getting nowhere, both consoles are winners in this case. The Xbox is better equipped to squeeze out the most performance due to far higher memory bandwidth but the ps3 out did Microsoft on the floating point operations which are often thought to be one good measure of a system’s performance in real world applications. Also, I noticed that the 360 is going to be considerably cheaper but the ps3 will have added features such as Bluetooth and blu-ray capabilities. I won’t even get into the CPUs because it is just too debatable but personally I think the Xbox would perform better in a gaming environment. The list can go on and on, but it all comes down to whether you like Sony or Microsoft better and the experiences you’ve had with the systems in the past. Cloud01, how in the world could you compare Halo to any other game? You have to realize that Halo was a revolutionary game in multiplayer that was addicting whether you liked it or not. I mean what other game like halo has tournaments all across the nation or parties based on the game where there are 4 xboxes hooked up all over the house in the biggest multiplayer experience ever (haven’t personally experienced it but would like to). And besides if you want to bring up facts, do you see Socom with a Game of the Year logo on it? I don’t think so. So hopefully you were just speaking for yourself. I can safely say that Playstation does have better graphics than Xbox but I wouldn’t go far as to say it is superior Cloud01. I think you are the one that might be getting the false info from Sony. I don’t know, maybe you say those things to yourself just so you can sleep better at night. So, with an open mind I’d have to say this would be a toss up, but with a closed mind I would have to say GO XBOX!!!!

look the ps2 annoyed me because everyone i know who bought a ps2 before xbox came out ps2s crashed(one of them had to margerine in the drive and the dvd tray just he could get his games back) broke even mine so i hope the riliabilty is so much better because im swinging towards the xbox 360 because microsoft look afther there custmers they were even giving new power cords because the originals some of them went duff and if you look on a bottom of an xbox you will see saying its got a 2 year garrenty(well mine dose) and correct me if im wrong ps2 didnt hav thats why i bought a xbox instead so unless sony improve the rilabilty on the ps3 i aint wasting 200 quid one o year killzone sucks halo 2 rules over most games ps2

Wow. - Go to gametrailers.com. Watch the Killzone trailer. Look at how amazing it is. Now watch the gameplay footage for Killzone. Look at how not amazing it is. Seriously, there is no way that the trailer was in-game, except where the real engine served as a model for a few of the poorer animations (such as the bad- guy getting pushed over the railing). Now watch the Gears of War trailer, or the Need for Speed trailer, both for the 360, which I believe are both in-game. (Oh, and Ghost Recon as well) They are amazing. Honestly, I that the original Halo looked better than the in-game footage for Killzone. System performance for the next-gen consoles aside, and admitting that I am a sucker for good graphics, after good gameplay, I believe that for me, the games on the 360 and the ps3 will follow the trend between the first xbox and the ps2- the Playstation will always have tons of good games, but the games that I like to play and am amazed with every time I play them will be on the xbox. - and remember, competition is a good thing. Be nice to eachother. And start using some punctuation, guys.

The 300 and sixty device has obviousely and dissapointlingly got a tray loading CD/DVD drive, this makes for a less futureistic gaming experience, causing the user to feel as if he/she has missed out on a great oppertunity or similar.

I say obviousely because if you have a close up look at the remote control you will notice that there is an open/close button (not to be confused with the eject if cd is inside button)

i experienced VR simulation before. the walking/running part was controlled by the click of a button, but all other movements are controlled by your own body… so i am guessing this will be similar if not the same.

as to when a console like that will be coming out… your guess is as good as mine. but i am hoping that they release something like that in 4-5 years time, just in time for the generation that will succeed ps3 and xbox 360.

Well, Sony is hyping their floating point performance, which they say is a billion, kajillion times more than a regular PC. In reality, that is only 20% of the game. My guess is that the 360 will come out on top graphics wise. It just looks more solid than the PS3.

You can’t take what majornelson.com says about the two sytems as fact. That’s where some of you are plagarizing your “three time more general purpose cpu..”. Mjornelson.com, the author, works for microsoft and is none other than a propagandist for the 360. I joined this site so I could make one post, correcting those of no knowlege what-so-ever of computer science. The PS3’s CPU is far superior to that of the xbox 360’s. As far as the GPUs are concerned, there is not enough actual spec on the custom GPU’s to make an adequete assessment of each’s capabilities. As far as the CPUs are concerned…

The SPEs recieve instructions w/out the PPE. From the way realworldtech described it, the SPEs are independent, communicate with each other, and the PPE is separate and handles 64-bit instruction and instructions SPEs cannot perform because of their limitations to vector math(video games, exactly what they need to do). It even appears in the actual pictures of the cell that the PPE is bipassed and not at the helm of incoming data, two paragraphs from now I confirm what is seen in the picture, not diagram, but picture and (both picture and statement) sourced from realworldtech.

The SPEs are connected through EIB to the PPE, but the SPEs are also connected to system memory through MIC. The SPEs recive instruction from either source and both the PPE and SPEs recive and execute their own instruction independently from MIC. The SPEs recive and execute instruction simultaneously without the PPE. The PPE rather is another, more capable, core. In all reality the cell processor has 9 independent cores, 1 power processing core, and 8 SPEs which are actually full vector CPUs (damn straight, you heard it, CPUs) due to their own 256KB LS (cache).
Each core is independent and can communicate with System memory, each other, and the PPE.

Bottom line: SPEs do not recieve, but can coloborate, their instrution from the PPE, rather the system memory just like the PPE does. The 256GFLOPs compared to the 6 threaded xbox 360 CPU, which is what, ~115GFLOPS, I forgot the exact number, is solid. The computing capabilities general purpose or not, are superior in the cell processor. Damn, the 256GLOPS is only the rating for 8 SPEs too, PPE not included.

Each SPE is more powerful in vector graphics (what consoles cpu s need todo) the each core of the xbox 360. The xbox 360 has a total 6 thread capacity versus a total 18 thread capacity of the Cell processor. Each SPE is actually two threaded, along with the PPE (power pc full function core, similar to a super computer core).

Your statements are back by nothing aside from ignorance as to the true nature of CPUs and computer science. The PS3’s CPU is more than double that processing capabilities running a real-time application in single precision (such as a video game, durr) than the xbox’s meager and regretted 3 core CPU. And the cell includes outstanding dual precision worksation capabilities (25-30 GFLOPS) for extensive use outside of the PS3.

When adequete information is available on the GPUs I garuntee that I can and will provide an assessment proving the 1.8 TFLOPS rated PS3 GPU far superior to the unified pipeline (whoop-dee-f*cking-doo, that’s going to make the difference, not) xbox 360 GPU. I know, and it is obvious the PS3 GPU is far superior, by I need much more specs to prove it to you, those in denial, who request solid backing.

All CPU specifications were taken from an IBM conference on the Cell processor, arstechnia.com and realworldtech.com, all of them also just summarized the long awaited Cell conference. And the xbox 360 specs were taken from xbox.com and majornelson.com, I used his ignorence against him, too easy, having him reveal internal workings of his project at MS and then filling in the miscontrued facts to prove him an ignorant propagandist was fun.

When you have actual knowlege of both systems, their internals, from both a sony press conference, a cell press conference, and MS’s own word about their system. It becomes obvious which is superior. No official prices have been released, so shut-up about cost. PS3 will not come with HDD, recent news. And the PS3 will allow you to run linux on it, and will run any other os that the publisher (microsoft windows, apple, etc.) for it.

i was a sony fan and was guna wait for the ps3 untill i read some facts on stes and done reasearch of numerous sites. Microsoft will be the winner this time around because it has a advantage of lauching first this time around. The nividia chip or whatever the company is called will have made better graphics cards when sony realeases there console. Xbox 360s grpahics card however is custom made and will not be out till end of next year maybe 2007 and as well all kno ati has been at there top of the game for some time. Sonys e3 conference was all bullshit made up lies with pre rendering videos atleast the 360’s were real footage of games and there games were runnig on alpha kits which is only 25% of the 360’s full power and even then gears of war ghost recon 3 luked amazing. Sony has left to many things for the cell to do the 7 spe’s dont have individual cache memory this will have to be used throught the cell and also not all of sony components will work at the same time one component will always be tryin g to catch up with the others. also i was was just in china and a normal dvd(20 us) for instance was only 7 yen bran new which is less than a dollar so in essance if somethig costs 460 dollars in china you can go way up from there in the us market. Xbox has a 512mb video card which by itself no matter what its against will still be awesome. i have a alienware with a 256mb nvidia. lol, just reading all of the above which BTW took about 30 to 45 min, I have come to the conclusion that 360 is looking the strongest AT THE MOMENT! I like both sony and xbox, so don’t call me a xbox fanboy.

Everyone must remember though that everyone will buy these consoles for different reasons. Everyone has different needs. When I had saved up enough money for either a ps2 or xbox I chose xbox because I wanted something different, that was my need. I got a great machine, plus a sensational xbox live service, which BTW is getting better for xbox 360. PS3 games like final fantasy, metal gear solid, devil may cry, gt and the rest will always be great and have a huge following. Oh, final fantasy is coming to xbox 360 starting with FF 11 online, then final fantasy 13 and so on.

To tell you the truth, that was the biggest risk for me when i chose xbox was that there was no ff, but now thats changed, plus microsoft also has rare (banjo, conker, killer instinct). I got great games out of xbox, halo, fable, doom 3, pariah, gta 3 vice city and san andreas, just to name a few.

To me it seems that some ps exclusives are moving to xbox like ff and gta whats next?

Now that was the biggest crap/piece of info/speculation i ever heard.

I wouldnt be suprised if some of you work(or would like) for Microsoft, Propaganda and marketing division/department/section or something like that. I have only come up with facts, specifications and predictions which clearly say that PS3 has the better:
1. Graphic card (slightly better)
2. CPU (Cell is better in many ways, real technical development and real new-generation, including the FLOPS handle and other possibilities, which the custom IBM Xbox360 lacks)
3. Memory RAM (fastest in the world Rambus memory)
4. Wireless, bluetooth, ethernet…
5. Many ports and misc. (usb, memory stick, cf, hdd support…)
6. Many formats up-to-date all the way up to blu-ray 100GB (which will enable developers to make new-generation games without limitation, uncompressed textures…)
7. Compatible with ps1&ps2 (cool for those who want to play for example many PS2 hits)
8. The prise will be about 400$ or less (without the hdd)
9. Good online support, probably users will have also some free space on internet provided by sony
10. Better HDTV support and graphic quality combined
11. If you think Microsoft has the upper hand with the current announced developers/support you think wrong, sony will kick xbox360 in the nutts ! :)

360’s graphical core speed can “easily” counter PS3’s supposed superiority says ATi

Numbers - the public loves them. Bigger equals better. It’s one of the reasons Xbox 360 is called Xbox 360 rather than Xbox 2. Stack an Xbox 2 next to a PS3 on a shop shelf, and which is you average punter going to think is better? And this is similarly the case with Xbox 360 and PS3 graphical core speeds, reckons ATi - but we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be blinded by what’s written down on paper.
Xbox 360’s Xenos graphical core runs at 500Mhz. PS3’s nVidia-developed RSX graphical core runs at 550Mhz. However, ATi’s Richard Huddy, whose job is talking to developers about the company’s technology, says that the Xbox 360’s unique graphical architecture quite capably makes up for the apparent shortfall between the two core speeds

“That mere 10% clock speed that RSX has on Xenos is easily countered by the unified shader architecture that we’ve implemented,” is the word from Huddy in an interview with website Bit-tech.net.

Dipping further into technical details, Huddy says that “Rather than separate pixel and vertex pipelines, we’ve created a single unified pipeline that can do both. He highlights high-end PC power in comparison, saying that high-end PC chips typically run at between 50% and 60% efficiency.

Bit-tech.net has also questioned Huddy on how the two next-gen consoles’ CPU architecture will affect general brute grunt and graphical power. His response is that, while PS3 with seven Cell cores appears to have considerable CPU power, the real bottleneck lies in the graphical side of things.

Huddy talks about the current trend in the CPU world of going “multi-threaded and multi-core” (think CPU’s processing things very, very fast; Xbox 360 has three PowerPC cores, incidentally), saying that while “writing multi-threaded apps for two or three cores is difficult… Doing it for seven separate cores, when the main core has a slightly different feature-set from the other six, is very, very difficult.”

Or in other words, PS3 presents developers with a far more difficult challenge than Xbox 360.

Huddy also reckons that because PS3’s RSX graphical core isn’t unified - i.e. it doesn’t feature unified vertex and pixel pipelines - “PS3 will almost certainly be slower and less powerful.”

The RSX from NVIDIA is not only faster, but the most advanced graphic chip of today. It will be similar to the G70 chip which comes out for PC market.
Huddy ofcourse works for ATi and he wants naturaly to convince that their “unified architecture” is gonna score up. When the ATis graphic card comes out with XBOX launch at the end of the year, some time later PS3 will come with todays most advanced graphic chip equiped which will be at least strong as the G70 for PC.
As for the developing/coding/making of games, that part what huddy says is not the truth. Whatsoever, furthemore, moreover :) the making of PS3 games won’t be harder, but easier than making PS2 games.

Also about the killzone trailers and the Sonys ps3 promo material, sony announced that it hasn’t been using the real console, that wasn’t real power. It can be quite stronger. Also the graphic card wasn’t finished and the develop-kits also werent/arent full-stage as we are speaking.

Earlier in the day, we were sent a comparative analysis of the Xbox 360’s power vs. the PlayStation 3’s power.

We decided to put this Microsoft-provided information up undigested. Thus, enclosed is a Microsoft-made comparitive analysis. We have not altered, added, or tinkered with the data. We have not interpreted the specs. We have cut and pasted this information from the email into our site and formatted it. Make of it what you will, but be clear we know Microsoft has clearly slanted this info, and we’re not endorsing it, just printing their version. There is a difference.

XBOX 360 / PLAYSTATION 3 PERFORMANCE COMPARISON

SUMMARY
Now that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 specifications have been announced, it is possible to do a real world performance comparison of the two systems.

There are three critical performance aspects of a console:

* Central Processing Unit (CPU) performance.
* The Xbox 360 CPU architecture has three times the general purpose processing power of the Cell.
* Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) performance
* The Xbox 360 GPU design is more flexible and it has more processing power than the PS3 GPU.
* Memory System Bandwidth
* The memory system bandwidth in Xbox 360 exceeds the PS3’s by five times.

The Xbox 360’s CPU has more general purpose processing power because it has three general purpose cores, and Cell has just one.

Cell’s claimed advantage is on streaming floating point work which is done on its seven DSP processors.

The Xbox 360 GPU has more processing power than the PS3’s. In addition, its innovated features contribute to overall rendering performance.

Xbox 360 has 278.4 GB/s of memory system bandwidth. The PS3 has less than one-fifth of Xbox 360’s (48 GB/s) of total memory system bandwidth.

CONCLUSION
When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3. Keep in mind that Sony has a track record of over promising and under delivering on technical performance. The truth is that both systems pack a lot of power for high definition games and entertainment.

However, hardware performance, while important, is only a third of the puzzle. Xbox 360 is a fusion of hardware, software and services. Without the software and services to power it, even the most powerful hardware becomes inconsequential. Xbox 360 games—by leveraging cutting-edge hardware, software, and services—will outperform the PlayStation 3.
The Xbox 360 processor was designed to give game developers the power that they actually need, in an easy to use form. The Cell processor has impressive streaming floating-point power that is of limited use for games.

The majority of game code is a mixture of integer, floating-point, and vector math, with lots of branches and random memory accesses. This code is best handled by a general purpose CPU with a cache, branch predictor, and vector unit.

The Cell’s seven DSPs (what Sony calls SPEs) have no cache, no direct access to memory, no branch predictor, and a different instruction set from the PS3’s main CPU. They are not designed for or efficient at general purpose computing. DSPs are not appropriate for game programming.

Xbox 360 has three general purpose CPU cores. The Cell processor has only one.

Xbox 360’s CPUs has vector processing power on each CPU core. Each Xbox 360 core has 128 vector registers per hardware thread, with a dot product instruction, and a shared 1-MB L2 cache. The Cell processor’s vector processing power is mostly on the seven DSPs.

Dot products are critical to games because they are used in 3D math to calculate vector lengths, projections, transformations, and more. The Xbox 360 CPU has a dot product instruction, where other CPUs such as Cell must emulate dot product using multiple instructions.

Cell’s streaming floating-point work is done on its seven DSP processors. Since geometry processing is moved to the GPU, the need for streaming floating-point work and other DSP style programming in games has dropped dramatically.

Just like with the PS2’s Emotion Engine, with its missing L2 cache, the Cell is designed for a type of game programming that accounts for a minor percentage of processing time.

Sony’s CPU is ideal for an environment where 12.5% of the work is general-purpose computing and 87.5% of the work is DSP calculations. That sort of mix makes sense for video playback or networked waveform analysis, but not for games. In fact, when analyzing real games one finds almost the opposite distribution of general purpose computing and DSP calculation requirements. A relatively small percentage of instructions are actually floating point. Of those instructions which are floating-point, very few involve processing continuous streams of numbers. Instead they are used in tasks like AI and path-finding, which require random access to memory and frequent branches, which the DSPs are ill-suited to.

Based on measurements of running next generation games, only ~10-30% of the instructions executed are floating point. The remainders of the instructions are load, store, integer, branch, etc. Even fewer of the instructions executed are streaming floating point—probably ~5-10%. Cell is optimized for streaming floating-point, with 87.5% of its cores good for streaming floating-point and nothing else.

Even ignoring the bandwidth limitations the PS3’s GPU is not as powerful as the Xbox 360’s GPU.

Below are the specs from Sony’s press release regarding the PS3’s GPU.

RSX GPU

* 550 MHz
* Independent vertex/pixel shaders
* 51 billion dot products per second (total system performance)
* 300M transistors
* 136 “shader operations” per clock

The interesting ALU performance numbers are 51 billion dot products per second (total system performance), 300M transistors, and more than twice as powerful as the 6800 Ultra.

The 51 billions dot products per cycle were listed on a summary slide of total graphics system performance and are assumed to include the Cell processor. Sony’s calculations seem to assume that the Cell can do a dot product per cycle per DSP, despite not having a dot product instruction.

However, using Sony’s claim, 7 dot products per cycle * 3.2 GHz = 22.4 billion dot products per second for the CPU. That leaves 51 - 22.4 = 28.6 billion dot products per second that are left over for the GPU. That leaves 28.6 billion dot products per second / 550 MHz = 52 GPU ALU ops per clock.

It is important to note that if the RSX ALUs are similar to the GeForce 6800 ALUs then they work on vector4s, while the Xbox 360 GPU ALUs work on vector5s. The total programmable GPU floating point performance for the PS3 would be 52 ALU ops * 4 floats per op *2 (madd) * 550 MHz = 228.8 GFLOPS which is less than the Xbox 360’s 48 ALU ops * 5 floats per op * 2 (madd) * 500 MHz= 240 GFLOPS.

With the number of transistors being slightly larger on the Xbox 360 GPU (330M) it’s not surprising that the total programmable GFLOPs number is very close.

The PS3 does have the additional 7 DSPs on the Cell to add more floating point ops for graphics rendering, but the Xbox 360’s three general purpose cores with custom D3D and dot product instructions are more customized for true graphics related calculations.

The 6800 Ultra has 16 pixel pipes, 6 vertex pipes, and runs at 400 MHz. Given the RSX’s 2x better than a 6800 Ultra number and the higher frequency of the RSX, one can roughly estimate that it will have 24 pixel shading pipes and 4 vertex shading pipes (fewer vertex shading pipes since the Cell DSPs will do some vertex shading). If the PS3 GPU keeps the 6800 pixel shader pipe co-issue architecture which is hinted at in Sony’s press release, this again gives it 24 pixel pipes* 2 issued per pipe + 4 vertex pipes = 52 dot products per clock in the GPU.

If the RSX follows the 6800 Ultra route, it will have 24 texture samplers, but when in use they take up an ALU slot, making the PS3 GPU in practice even less impressive. Even if it does manage to decouple texture fetching from ALU co-issue, it won’t have enough bandwidth to fetch the textures anyways.

For shader operations per clock, Sony is most likely counting each pixel pipe as four ALU operations (co-issued vector+scalar) and a texture operation per pixel pipe and 4 scalar operations for each vector pipe, for a total of 24 * (4 + 1) + (4*4) = 136 operations per cycle or 136 * 550 = 74.8 GOps per second.

Given the Xbox 360 GPU’s multithreading and balanced design, you really can’t compare the two systems in terms of shading operations per clock. However, the Xbox 360’s GPU can do 48 ALU operations (each can do a vector4 and scalar op per clock), 16 texture fetches, 32 control flow operations, and 16 programmable vertex fetch operations with tessellation per clock for a total of 48*2 + 16 + 32 + 16 = 160 operations per cycle or 160 * 500 = 80 GOps per second.

Overall, the automatic shader load balancing, memory export features, programmable vertex fetching, programmable triangle tesselator, full rate texture fetching in the vertex shader, and other “well beyond shader model 3.0″ features of the Xbox 360 GPU should also contribute to overall rendering performance.

Bandwidth
The PS3 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and 25.6 GB/s of RDRAM bandwidth for a total system bandwidth of 48 GB/s.

The Xbox 360 has 22.4 GB/s of GDDR3 bandwidth and a 256 GB/s of EDRAM bandwidth for a total of 278.4 GB/s total system bandwidth.

Why does the Xbox 360 have such an extreme amount of bandwidth? Even the simplest calculations show that a large amount of bandwidth is consumed by the frame buffer. For example, with simple color rendering and Z testing at 550 MHz the frame buffer alone requires 52.8 GB/s at 8 pixels per clock. The PS3’s memory bandwidth is insufficient to maintain its GPU’s peak rendering speed, even without texture and vertex fetches.

The PS3 uses Z and color compression to try to compensate for the lack of memory bandwidth. The problem with Z and color compression is that the compression breaks down quickly when rendering complex next-generation 3D scenes.

HDR, alpha-blending, and anti-aliasing require even more memory bandwidth. This is why Xbox 360 has 256 GB/s bandwidth reserved just for the frame buffer. This allows the Xbox 360 GPU to do Z testing, HDR, and alpha blended color rendering with 4X MSAA at full rate and still have the entire main bus bandwidth of 22.4 GB/s left over for textures and vertices.

CONCLUSION
When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3. Keep in mind that Sony has a track record of over promising and under delivering on technical performance. The truth is that both systems pack a lot of power for high definition games and entertainment.

However, hardware performance, while important, is only a third of the puzzle. Xbox 360 is a fusion of hardware, software and services. Without the software and services to power it, even the most powerful hardware becomes inconsequential. Xbox 360 games—by leveraging cutting-edge hardware, software, and services—will outperform the PlayStation 3.
Lastly, we were sent updated spec numbers on the Xbox’s numbers, and we spoke with Microsoft’s Vice President of hardware, Todd Holmdahl, about the Xbox 360’s final transistor count.

Another bit of information sent our way is the final transistor count for Xbox 360’s graphics subset. The GPU totals 332 million transistors, which is spit between the two separate dies that make up the part. The parent die is the “main” piece of the GPU, handling the large bulk of the graphics rendering, and is comprised of 232 million transistors. The daughter die contains the system’s 10MB of embedded DRAM and its logic chip, which is capable of some additional 3D math. The daughter die totals an even 100 million transistors, bringing the total transistor count for the GPU to 232 million.

I’m personally not a fanboy for I have all systems. I do prefer my Xbox because I like the games and Live is the shiznat. Everyone’s saying the Cell is going to rape the Xbox360 and I have to say I disagree. 7 SPE’s… so what… two dual outputs… ok, cause we all can afford 2 HDTV’s… Blue-Ray… not even a standard that will be supported for some time. Again, I’m not bashing the PS3 and I believe it has potential and will be an awesome unit. But after reading an article from Anandtech’s website, it shined a lot of light on both consoles strengths and weaknesses. Something really cool I just realised about the PS3… if they have dual-screen support built into every console, it could be very easy for developers to specify ‘dual screen’ as a possible display mode when you play multi-player in any game.

So if you have an old telly lying around, you could use that instead of split-screen! Sweet!

FPSs will still be heck to control. The PS3’s analog sticks are still on the same axis, while Xbox 360 (and the original Xbox) has the left one higher, making FPSs easier to control.

I’ve got both an Xbox and PS2. I actually prefer getting games for Xbox because the saving/reloading is always much faster due to them having a hard disc.

To be honest I am suspicious of Microsoft’s foray into the console market. As a web designer I’ve seen how effectively they can take over a market and then stifle all innovation.

As I’ve said earlier in this thread, at the end of the day it’s ridiculous to be a fan of either console… you have to judge them on features alone, and be grateful that there is such strong competition driving things forward. On the more pratical note of just how the PS3 will network, if at all, Sony has had much less to say. Xbox Live surges ahead, a proven force for the greater good in gaming. PS3? Apparently you’ll be able to stream happy snaps wirelessly from it’s hard drive to your PSP. Great.

For all i know grand turismo is mostly pictures not rendered maybe the cars yes. Forza is a great competitor to that game and everything in the game is graphics.

Elminster i just made a point of the graphics beacause it is running on dev kits so think of the potential for photo realistic games on the 360 plus killzone 2 trailer was pre rendered and both have comparable graphics. So until sony shows us a game running on ps3 hardware they are liars who always over promise and microsoft is a very humble company who always steps up to the plate and i think it good to see microsoft can play fair and still get extremely good results.

izlam, as it’s been pointed out numerous times in this thread already… the Xbox 360 dev kits are dual G5 macs, so until Microsoft show us the games playing on final hardware they have no more credibility than Sony in terms of actual performance.

I should also point out that you’ve already been called out for copying & pasting microsoft PR material onto this thread and claiming it was an ‘unbiased expert’, so i’m not sure you have much credibility left to accuse Sony of being ‘liars’.

O yeah Elminster you said that racicing games are supposed to look good yeah because of compitition but racing games really test the system’s power.Like think about it pgr3’s graphics staying consistent while moving at like 260 mph without sluggish game play.Think about a system processing and rendering that good and fast:)

I dont know about racing games being the gratest genre, i mean me i get bored of going round and round over and over again, but there are some cool racing games ive played. The one im lookin forward to is FULL AUTO because it has racing and guns in the same package plus it looks awesome as well.

Yes i agree its “one” of the best genre but not “the” best. I think other genres surpass racing. I mean racing gets boring, well for me it does you guys might like it or watever but i mean crashing into cars and watching them explode……………..that has been done so to me theres no more “omg i crashed and it was kool!”

Hey my sony loving friends were telling me the ps3 controllers are for comfort(bs) it looks very awkward to me. It loofs like you cannot move the position in which you are holding it alot.

the xbox 360 controller is awsome it looks great and it has the ejct button on the controller for the drive on the xbox 360 so you just press the button and it turns on the xbox360 and it opens the drive then you put the cd on and press the eject button again and your ready to go and the xbox 360 has the ED-RAM so it will load SO QUICK! it will be very helpfull

anyways there is nothing wrong with the controller it does look like it can be held quite nicely

Did anyone hear about this crap that Microsoft was scared of Sony at E3? To me I think it was quite the opposite. I think Sony had lied about their specs to make it look better then the xbox360. Anyone with a brain would know that the killzone2 footage was pre-rendered. No playable demos, really no huge announcements for the PS3 and if anyone tells me that 7 bluetooth controllers is good can go to hell. Imagine having 7 players on one screen, microscopes anyone?

Microsoft’s Xbox360 is like a gem in a pile of shit, of course the shit is Sony. Playable demos aplenty (especially since only working on 15% of the xbox360’s final power), huge announcements (Square coming to xbox360 and a list of other great Japan games) and the controller is still all good, plus with the addition of shortcut buttons.

What’s the point of all this, well yeah, Sony should be afraid of the xbox360, very afraid. The xbox 360 has shown lots of new features and an updated Xbox Live service, did anyone hear about free xbox live on weekends, NICE! Meanwhile, have a really good think about what the PS3 really is, really think about it. It’s like a PS2 with improved graphics, thats all.

Watever you say Elminster, my only problem was that people thought killzone 2 was real gameplay and who knows maybe it is but theres no proof. PS3 and XBOX360 will both be great systems no matter what man. Each system has always had something that makes me actually buy it. Yeah i tend to agree with( xbox 360) i think sony is committing suicied why would they make a counsole that will take so much money out of the company and will not in the end make any profit:)??? This is my opinion and I’m entitled to it like everyone else, this is how I see it
Next Gen console wars PS3>XBOX>REVOLUTION and my reason
1. if the PS3 ends up costing more then XBOX 360 it’s fully backwards compatible so people can trade in the old PS2’s to help fill in the difference
2. it’s true when people say you can’t trust sony but it’s the same for MS and every company they just say what they think everyone wants to hear so you buy there product
3.it’s true that in the past you have 1 winning console then another company shows up and pushes the current one off top spot but sony hit the consople market in a way the world has never seen I believe it’ll lose some ground but I do not believe it’ll be beaten atleast not the next gen
4. Both companies can rot in hell cause of how they neglect Aussies like myself(had to put that one in)
5. Cell’s and blu-ray’s potential can not be denied, I’m not saying it can’t be matched(XBOX 360) but it just opens some nice doors

Honestly I like both machines alot and don’t knock the PS3 controller until you tried it. about 6 years ago a company released a controller that looked just like the PS3’s controller and it worked fantastic! it felt great in the hands and the button layout was great. I will be getting both consoles for the shear fact that each console will offer something different than the other. I do feel that the design of the Xbox360 is a little odd compared to the smooth design of the PS3. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in :)

They have never won a game at international level. 1. I can’t see this VR for nintendo coming true for their next console.

2. PS3’s new controller design is sleek and unique (even if it does look like a boomerang). Is it comfortable, only time will tell.

3. Is it just me or stores like EB Games and the rest determine which console is better? Eg: Lots of PS2 games, followed by fair amount of xbox games, then a very small selection of gamecube games. To the average gamer, someone who see’s the great selection of games on PS2 will think it is the best cause there is more games.

On that third point, just IMHO. To me, it’s like an occuring theme. Does anyone else see this happening?

Not just to the average gamer, an advanced gamer knows the benifit of a greater selection of games.
if you have 10 FPS’s on one system and 4 on another that’s 10 chances you have of finding a FPS you like instead of 4 chances

PS2’s larger selection of games is not my reason for preffering it
my reason is Final Fantasy(Damn I love it)+ Silent Hill +Tekken + GTA +maybe Resident evil(heard it was coming back to Playstation prolly just rumour but let’s hope)
if the Xbox had all those games also I’d buy the first console I could reach out and grab when I walked into Kmart
My FPS of choice for a fun time is the first Halo though even on legendary it’s too easy but it’s really fun especially when you pistol it

By the way Izlam, Sony lost about $100 each PS2 they sold when they first released it if you didn’t know that, or for that matter, if ANYONE didn’t know that. yeh halo 2 was incredible graphically that game was the best and in terms of gameplay that too was very good and smooth i hope gears of war turns out to be a game that has good gameplay and not just some game that looks spectacular xbox could hav had a poll on there website and see the votes for the best game then make them backwards compatible.

It took me 8 hours to complete fable and it took me about 80 to complete elderscrolls 3. I was really dissapointed with fable. Elderscrolls 4 is going to be much better than fable 2. But to answer you question ps 360 fable is nothing like any elderscrolls games.

A new pack of Halo 3 rumors is spreading on the net today. The storyline might be a little different, you might even be able to play the campaign mode with more than just one allie by your side. Here’s some rumors about bungie’s new development of Halo 3.

1) It will have a darker and more gritty story than the previous games.

2) They’re attempting to maintain an online cooperative component for the campaign supporting more than two players at once.

3) It has a lot of cinematics planned for it. The opening scenes apparently occur thousands of years before the timeline of the original Halo: Combat Evolved’s story.

4) It will have a multiplayer mode which pits players against bots in scenarios that are directly connected to the story of the game.

5) They’re attempting to implement both a map editor and a movie maker, which would allow players to send and receive their maps/movies through Xbox Live. This would apparently be on a separate disc, and they have an entire team working just on these two projects.

6) Zanzibar, Sidewinder and Hang Em High are said to return to the multiplayer mode, completely reworked. Zanzibar will be mangled and torn apart as though after the battle, the sky will be dark red. Sidewinder will have four legs instead of just two, with bases at each end. Hang Em High will have a massive tree at its center and the structure will be deteriorated.

7) They want to support more than fifty players on Xbox Live for certain maps.

halo 2.5 for 360 would be better at launch cause you did say a few months after -=[M[X]K]=- some people might even wait for halo 3 who know’s. this supporting the resolution business will there any games that will be able to actually play 1080i and 1080p so far all microsoft games are at 720p.

The xbox 360 looks like a unsmoked joint, enhaled waiting to get passed to the next person to take a puff. And the “Ring of Light” looks like a old school fisher price touch ‘n’ light from the 1960’s. Those are my thought of the XBOX 360’s design. The PS3 reminds me of a old school Turbo Duo RX or a FM Towns Marty (if you know what those are) without the cd-rom loader on top. Honestly, what do you expect these things to look like? hot-rods with a carbon fiber roof scoop? with chrome rims with a phat-ass sound system?

lol, cute. I’m not sure how the launch of Xbox 360 at christmas will hurt the PS3. If you all remember the days of the Sega Mega Drive and the Super Famicom it was the Genesis that came out first to dominate then Nintendo came in to take the trophy away from Sega. Even though I do have 2 Xboxs and 1 PS2 I play my PS2 more than my xbox because of the content, not because of PlayOnline or any other multiplayer service, thats why I have a PC. You’ll see different colors of the Xbox 360 out on the market soon after the release. You’ll see limited editions of the console with the release of certain titles. but, you’ll only see this in japan for awhile until it makes waves over to other countries. Hey i just realised hat the xbox did not have many multiplayer games in the sense they or not have many games that your crew could swing by your house and play but they have alot of games based on online play.

Thats where Nintendo and Playstation really dominate the market at. Bandai,Husdon soft, Nintendo and Sega come out with most of the party games. Xbox had that kung fu fighter party game which was loads of fun. You also have some pretty decent fighters out there as well but most won’t even make it out of japan.

When i get my PS3 after a while, i am gonna touch the surface and feel good. It looks so futuristic and trendy, it is for gods and for average people. And the gamepad, i also had one for the PC similar to PS3s and god it ruled, it was not heavy and the banana, boomerang shape made me be in heaven. PS3 will be a great mashine console, friend…
Also remember hundred of games for Sony PSX, and Sony PS2 will be playable. OMG thousands of games for PS3 plus the newest next-gen titles avalaible for PS3. This is gonna rock !

I think the xbox360 is goin to out perform the ps3. I think sony used the cell as a marketing strategy makin a point of their 2 terraflops when it does not matter cause the ps3’s bandwith cant hadle the cells power.

Graphics are gonna rock on all 3 of the next-gen consoles (Xbox360, PS3 & Nintendo Revolution)….period.

Remember this though, there may be hundreds of games of the PS3 cause of backwards capability, but, xbox360 have backwards capability on ALL GAMES of their games not just some, plus with xbox live you be able to download new levels or characters for games, plus demos, movies, music and trailers. Thats something sony HAS to look into.

Sony does have great games though like FF, devil may cry and a number of platform games, that will always have a huge following of. Yeah, im a fan of some, though I have to see what else PS3 will offer before I buy one.

Yeah ps3 may be backwards compatible with all ps2 games but lets keep in mind that not all ps2 games were good. There is only some games and if there were it was a one time passing it and that was it. The point is that would you rather play ps2 games on your ps3 or play next-gen games.>?

Well, I know some of you are Xbox fans but honestly Xbox didn’t have content that the PS2 had. Of coruse you have HALO1&2, KOTR1&2, Jade Empire, Phantom Dust and a few others, lets not forget 5 or 6 games don’t make a console for 5 years. PS2 has the market right now because of all the content, come on lets be serious Sony isn’t going to lose this battle and you’d be a fool to think the PS3 isn’t a machine that could blow your eyes outa your sockets. If your a hardcore gamer or a gamer at that then you would get all 3 systems and enjoy what the dev’s have to offer us.

Where are you getting your information from? This is no way valid by a long shot. When the PS2 was released one of the hotest things about the console was you could play PS1 games on the system along with PS2 games, but the emulator didn’t play all PS1 games. Now with the PS3 and the improved emulator you can play all the games on that console without error. Also, Nintendo’s revolution is going to sell like hotcakes for the shear fact that you can play the old school titles along with the gamecube titles on 1 console! Games are games no matter how you look at it.

It’s called marketing. For instance, I’m a import gamer 100%. I don’t play domestic games at all and if I do it’s for my (US) Xbox. So I don’t mind play $$$ for a import system with games, thats what I do. I game.
It’s not all about how much they loose in the end, Microsoft, Sony & Nintendo don’t make crap on the consoles. They make all their cash off the content, When you by a Xbox or PS2 game these days, did ya ever bother to look in the upper left or right hand corner of the game boxes and notice the name Xbox? Or Playstation 2? They make a CRAP load of cash off the their own Licences/publishing rather than hardware. Plus, come on.. this is sony were talking about here. The company that makes appliances for just about every need imaginable. Honestly I’d be worried more about MS alot more than Sony. Microsoft has been losing market share for long time now and current analsyts don’t see a bright future for Microsoft if they keep going in the direction they’re going now. Xbox360 3shickedsdy, again its all about the games and the support, not all the hardware and if that was the case nintendo would have been outa the scene back when they had the N64.

Anyway, I can’t wait for the first details for the next GTA. Imagine how big the world is going to be, remember how big San Andreas was. Then you have the graphics, nice. Fellow gamers and friends, we are ALL in for treat when this comes out.

What do you guys think should be in the next GTA? I think the ability to raise a family, you know ‘The Sims’ style.

It should also be online, where there are thousands of people and you can talk to them via headphones. You can create clans and earn money through businesses. I think this would be cool. There would be clan wars and drive-by shootings left, right and center.

ANYWAY…… i think there will be when they realease xbox360 in Japan, and could manipulate digital photos. Microsoft Japan’s Xbox division has released a product called Xbox Video Chat that uses a camera for videoconferencing but it seems Microsoft’s plans for the next generation is to take the use of this camera to a totally new level.

Speaking on PlayStation 3 capability to deliver two 1080p signals: The total number of 1080p-capable TVs on the planet today is … zero. There are none. Sony has got a dual … I want to make sure I say this right, because it’s science fiction. They had dual HDMI outputs off the back of the console. And I think that there’s some theory that you could take dual 1080i signals and interlace them together to have a progressively rendered scene.

But again, there are no TVs that actually support this. I think most people are going to actually take one of the HDMI outputs and just feed it out at 1080i.

The new Dashboard: This has all of the features from the Guide, plus some of the stuff from the Xbox 1 Dashboard, plus a whole bunch of brand new Xbox 360 stuff as well. For some of the experiences, we actually want to leave the game altogether and go to what we call the Xbox Dashboard. You’ve seen an earlier version of the Dashboard on Xbox 1; it’s that green wire frame thing, the kind of spooky looking thing. They have completely redone that for Xbox 360. Unlike Xbox 1, where you have to get up and eject the disc to get into the Dashboard, which is a pain, anytime you have the Xbox Guide up in Xbox 360 you can now press X and it will take you out of the game and drop you right into the Xbox 360 Dashboard. And you can get right back into the game, if you want, without having to get up once again and reinsert the disc. You can even power up and down the console with your wireless controller.

On the new Guide: It overlays right on top of the game. What that means is that these Invitations and the Xbox Guide are available any time, in any game, or any other Xbox 360 experience. The game will usually pause, if it’s a single player game. In this case [the demo version of Crimson Skies] the game is still running, but most games will pause. With online multiplayer games, we’ll let the other people continue to go at it. But it’s up to the game [developer] to decide what it does here.

The Message Center: It’s very similar to email, but there are a few key differences. If you’ve used email, this is going to be very familiar. It gives you a list of messages just like your email Inbox, but this isn’t connected [directly] to the Internet. This is part of the Xbox Live service. So all of those messages are going to be gaming-specific or entertainment-specific messages from trusted people that you’ve given the OK to. I can also get an invite to chat, have an audio chat with someone. But with Xbox 360, people that have a camera can also send video messages to anyone, whether [the recipient] has a camera or not. And then they can play those video messages back.

The Media Blade: The Media Blade is the place you can go to experience connected digital entertainment experiences without any of that hard core competitive stuff. Obviously, xbox has got great support for music and photos here. Music can be ripped directly from a CD to the Xbox 360, but that’s actually not the optimal scenario. The optimal scenario is when you’ve already got your library of music ripped to your PC. Or, you’re a digital photographer and you’ve already got a photo library built up on your PC.

That black 360 image is bogus… dodgy Photoshop job and the wrong logo.

Unfortunately for console gamers (as opposed to PCs), the default hardware config makes a big difference to what game developers will offer. ie. the EyeToy was a huge seller, but most developers will not invest development budget into adding EyeToy support to their games if there’s no guarantee that everyone has one.

That why I think it’s very promising that the PS3 has dual display support out of the box. That implies to me that developers will include dual screen support for a lot of titles. A lot of people have older secondary TVs lying around, so that could make it easy to play multiplayer comfortably without needing 2 consoles. Death to split screen!

hmmmm….that sounds pretty sweet bruce, but ill have to wait and see.It seems like both consoles have there own advantages, they also have amazing games that make us wanna buy it even more, but well ill wait and see what the future says.

Xbox 360 Access is a section in the ‘Official Australian Xbox Magazine’ August issue. Im also refering to the DOA4 images OMG!

I finally saw some hi-res trailers of games coming up for both PS3 and Xbox360 (dial-up, what can ya do?) from a DVD in a PC magazine and WOW! And finally saw the killzone footage. You all may say ‘yeah you are a xbox fanboy’ but this is just my opinion.

Anyway here it is, please no offense to anyone….I think its fake. Well, I was looking at other trailers as well, like COD2 and Elder Scrolls4 and it just doesn’t match up for me. Please no offense to any PS supporters here, but, we all know PS3 is more powerful, but surely it can’t produce games like that, surely it can’t be that MORE POWERFUL then the Xbox360.

If the PS3 can produce games at that quality, then the xbox is FU#!ED, literally. Also if it does, what a fantastic day it will be for us gamers.

To tell you the truth, I hope the PS3 does create games at this quality, and if not the PS3, future consoles in general. Imagine games like that.

For instance, watch the Elder Scrolls trailer then the Killzone 2 trailer. The difference between the graphics is very significant, of course the later being superior. It looked even better then a Pixar movie, seriously.

I really hope I didn’t offend anyone. You all may have seen the trailer about a month ago already. It just feels too complex to do on a gaming console. Whew, I needed that of my chest.

yeh your rite the amount of detail put into that killzone trailer was incredeble doesnt matter if your using the cell or the ati or whatever you cant have a console yet which can produce games better then cinematic qualities such as toy story and many other conputer made films. they will probably aim to do it but its just to hard to do

also about the killzone 2 thing I do beleive it’s real but I also believe the Xbox 360 could do that aswell it just comes down to the amount of effort put into it
I’m not saying the people doing elder scrolls were lazy but killzone had potential there just wasn’t enough effort put intothe first 1, this time they might have went all out to try and keep there game alive when halo 3 comes out I suspect it’ll match killzone 2 graphically though the halo games are futuristic with alot more colour so they could never really be compared

oh also even if the killzone 2 thing was real I doubt the completed thing would look like that
that’s alot of work they’d be doing and it would take along time but I guess the PS3 won’t be out for awhile so if they put there minds to it it’s possible but I doubt it
if killzone 2 turns out to be 100% fake it means nothing to me, although I do like messing around on Halo no FPS has really done anything for me since red faction it’s story was ummm weird not bad but weird it didn’t look the best it could but that Geo mod was damn fun being able to blow a hole through walls is a good feature I hope they put in future FPS

The killzone footage is fake. Before the PS2 came out, Sony showed footage equall to Killzone2 for the PS2 and said it was “actual footage”. Sony always exagerates and I doubt the PS3 will be near as powerful as what they say.

I just heard that Sony is stripping the PS3 to cut costs. I heard this on planetxbox360.com. I knew it! Sony lied to everyone from the beginning…The PS3 probabaly wont have bluetooth or 1080p among other things.

I’ve seen the footage that was shown for the PS2 and I doubt very much you have nothing about the PS2’s footage looked anything like killzone 2 also this place isn’t like the others people here have stopped bullshiting about the other consoles and only talk about the good things

last I heard the only thing that there “cutting back on” is the hdd and an inbuilt router there not vital pieces of a console though but bone your making it sound like there throwing out the cell and RSX

Why is Halo3 being compared to Killzone2? No game (especially Halo3) should be compared graphically to a cgi movie. Nothing will look as good as a cgi, at least not in the next ten years or so. The point that I was trying to make earlier was that Sony exaggerates. The PS2 videos were exaggerated greatly as are the PS3’s. Any one who expects to play a game that looks as good as a cgi movie with todays technology at an affordable price are dreaming.

Another reson i think the killzone footage is fake i just read the navidia RSX would not be ready until later this year raising the question how can a game run on ps3 hardware and the the chipsets have not started to be made and the god dam graphics card is not finished yet!!!!!!!!!

Gabriel you say it’s fake and like all others you do not give the slightest hint of evidence? why is this? is it cause you have no evidence? does the thought that somthing that’s only a slight step up from Half-life2 could exist because that’s all killzone is a very small improvment from half life 2 IMO and since the current XBOX can play half life 2(an improved half life 2 I heard) why does the thought that the 2 latest beasts from sony and MS could play somthing that really doesn’t look that good offend you?
if you look at what the specs somthing needs to play half life 2(not much at all) why would 2 systems that have specs far supperior to what’s needed to play half life 2 not be able to play somthing that’s not really that good graphically

Do you really believe that Pixar creates their movies with a $400 console? I dont know what they use but I can safely say they use something far more powerfull that a ps3 or 360. Anyone here like Sonic the Hedgehog games? I really hope the next-gen Sonic games are so much better then now. The ideas in those games were good, but the outcome was very poor, control for example. Apparently I heard from a website that they might make a sonic rpg. Its a rumor, so proberbly be wrong, but that would be cool.

Just checked it out and the game that impressed me the most was the second last one on the last page. The western game made by Rockstar, man that will be good, especially if it is made by these guys. Just bought GTA San Andreas for xbox and im absolutly loving it to death, great game!

the only problem with FF 11 that I heard is the game pretty much forces you to be in a group and I really think that’s a bad thing cause sure it’s a mmorpg were you can meet people but alot of the times I’d preffer just to go it alone games like Wow(world of warcraft) need you to be in a group for some monster’s but you can easily do it solo for most parts cept for the real big bad monster’s like onyxia(thinks that’s her name) so yeah I’d like to play it cause it’s a final fantasy and if you like doing things in groups it would be good but I’d preffer a mmorpg were I’m not forced into a group just so I can survive past lvl 5 it may have other faults but the group thing is all I have heard
and I did have a heap of stuff about HD DVD and blu-ray before I formatted, I’ll gather some links if I can find some good ones for ya

nope it originally came out for the cube and it’s my understanding the cube is still the only console that has it it has been confirmed for PS2 but I’m unsure if it’s released anywere at the moment it’s prolly out there in alot of places and it’s just Australia being screwed around with as usual
though I shouldn’t say how bad Aussie cop it when New zealenders cop it worse I believe

1 question the xbox 360 comes with a 20gb hardrive then there is a memory card slots cant you save your saved games onto the hard drive or must you buy the memory card to do so?

with the current xbox you can do it on both, so propablely the same with 360
